Applications are invited for two research associate/assistant positions to work with the Advanced Processor Technologies (APT) Group in the EU-funded H2020 projects ECOSCALE (Energy-Efficient Heterogeneous Computing at exascale, see http://www.ecoscale.eu) and EuroExa (seehttps://euroexa.eu/). The projects are bringing together project partners across Europe to develop novel compute architectures together with a scalable programming environment for HPC computing at exascale performance where reducing data traffic and energy consumption are primary goals of the project.

To achieve this, hardware acceleration using FPGAs will be extensively used in ECOSCALE. The main focus of the Manchester team will be on backend tools for generating a reconfigurable hardware accelerator module library from HLS tool outputs as well as on FPGA virtualization and management.

All candidates should have profound knowledge in FPGA technology and hardware design. Additionally, candidates applying as a research associate should have or be about to obtain a PhD level qualification, or have equivalent experience in electrical / computer engineering.

Furthermore, expertise in one or more of the following areas is essential:

  • Distributed systems.
  • Partial reconfiguration of FPGAs.
  • Profound software development skills (for EDA tool development)
  • Operating systems and driver programming.
  • Specific expertise in compute intensive FPGA applications is highly desirable.

Candidates will work as part of a medium-size research team and will have opportunities to develop own research ideas. In addition, candidates will work closely with other partners. Consequently, excellent communication skills are required.

This post will be held in the Advanced Processor Technologies (APT) group. The APT group is a vibrant community of interdisciplinary researchers working on future many-core architectures, vertical integration, interconnects, and software collaborating with industry partners.

The APT group is also involved in the EU H2020 ExaNode, ExaNest, Eurolab4HPC, and EuroExa projects which together form a coherent and complete infrastructure for future energy conscious exascale systems.
