The laboratory of Professor Xiaolu Yang at the Perelman School of Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania, is seeking highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to join our dynamic and interdisciplinary team. Our research focuses on fundamental mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases and cancer, with current projects concentrated in two main areas:
1. Protein quality control, aging, and neurodegenerative diseases
We have discovered two novel protein quality control (PQC) systems involving tripartite motif (TRIM) proteins and poly-Asp/Glu (polyD/E) proteins. These systems are ATP-independent and uniquely conserved—TRIM in animals and polyD/E in eukaryotes—setting them apart from classical PQC mechanisms. We are exploring their molecular mechanisms, their roles in aging and neurodegenerative diseases (including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ALS), and their potential in therapeutic development.
2. Tumor suppression, metabolism, and autophagy
We study the regulation and function of the tumor suppressor p53, focusing on its roles in metabolic pathways essential for biosynthesis and redox balance. Our work explores how p53 functions as both a sensor and regulator of cellular metabolism. We are also identifying metabolic alterations that contribute to tumor initiation and progression. A recent extension of this work examines the role of metabolism and autophagy in stem cells, including embryonic and cancer stem cells.
