The Newmark Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is looking for an ambitious and self-motivated scientist interested in understanding the mechanisms by which stem cells drive regeneration in free-living flatworms (planarians) as well as disease pathology in parasitic blood flukes (i.e., schistosomes). Guided by experiments pioneered in planarians, our team is leveraging shared aspects of flatworm biology to characterize schistosome stem cells and development with the goal of understanding their biology and ultimately developing effective therapeutics. The successful candidate will have the chance to work in the exciting and rapidly expanding field of planarian and schistosome biology, with opportunities for interdisciplinary research. Principal Responsibilities

Spearhead projects to investigate development/regeneration in planarians and/or intra-mammalian development of schistosomes

Independently design and conduct experiments under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.

Keep up-to-date of pertinent literature to inform project design and experimental approaches.

Present data to the entire lab (~1-2 times a year), and occasionally at scientific meetings.

Train, supervise, and collaborate with other students and scientists.

Share research findings via peer-reviewed publications.

Qualifications

Ph.D. (currently or by May 2021) with experience in developmental biology, parasitology, immunology, genetics, biochemistry, or molecular biology.

Experience working with rodents preferred but not required.

Strong scientific publication history.

Excellent troubleshooting and organizational abilities.

Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.
