摘要:

A postdoctoral research fellowship is available for the following research topic: “Potential for personalised medicine in South Africa based on individual genetics and system-based analysis”

We require a biomedical engineer/bioinformaticist/computational biologist (or related discipline) for two years, with renewal after one year based on performance and progress.

The approach will be a combination of the traditional computational biology techniques, and systems modelling using approaches which may include, but are not limited to, system dynamics and agent-based modelling. One or more disease patterns will be chosen and an in-depth analysis of the genomic profile of the disease will be undertaken in the South African context. Based on the data, models of the disease in the individual and in the society will be developed and these models will be validated using real-world data. This approach requires the integration of two main computational techniques viz. computational biology and system analysis. It will thus require an individual with strong quantitative skills and a firm understanding of biology. Typically, this would be a biomedical engineer or bioinformaticist who is able to work across disciplines.

The postdoctoral fellow will be based at the Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB) at the University of the Witwatersrand, in the Division of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, and will be jointly hosted by Professors Rubin (Biomedical Engineering) and Ramsay (SBIMB). They will also need to forge collaborations with other researcher at Wits and further afield.
