  Postdoctoral Fellow in Surgery: Gastrointestinal Cancer Immunology and Nanomedicine, Houston, Texas, USA

  A postdoctoral fellowship position in the Department of Surgery to study gastrointestinal cancer immunology utilizing animal models and investigate innovative nanoparticle platforms to develop translational treatments for these cancers is immediately available in the laboratory of Ashley M. Holder, MD, at the Houston Methodist Research Institute, Houston, Texas. We are specifically investigating the immunologic effects of a surgical technique that utilizes hyperthermia and intraperitoneal (intra-abdominal) chemotherapy (HIPEC) to treat cancers that originate or spread to the abdominal cavity. Our lab is part of a multidisciplinary research organization focused on developing nanoparticle solutions to overcome biologic barriers and improve drug delivery. This position provides outstanding opportunities for continued scientific development and for contributing to groundbreaking research with high translational impact.   Requirements: MD or PhD with minimum 1 year of postdoctoral fellowship experience

  Job Responsibilities:

  • Plans, directs and coordinates complex research experiments following general technical procedures, under the guidance of the PI.

  • Works with PI to formulate research plans, coordinates project activities and establishes appropriate reporting procedures.

  • Analyze the data generated from these experiments and provide high level analysis to PI.

  • Prepares manuscripts, meeting presentations, and performs background literature searches.

  • Makes modifications to research procedures in collaboration with the PI.

  • Confers with PI regarding results obtained and receives suggestions for modification to procedures and/or interpretation of final data.

  • Provide assistance and oversight of staff, and graduate students ensure projects are being completed according to the research plan.

  • Perform/supervise rodent surgery including laparotomy, intraperitoneal injections, and IVIS, while also maintaining an accurate animal database.

  • Lab work will also involve tissue culture; DNA, RNA, and protein-related assays; drug-sensitivity assays.

  • Studies will also interface with experts in immunology, nanomedicine, pathology, biostatistics, medicinal chemistry and other specialties.

  • Assist PI in overseeing general lab operations including inventory, lab organization and maintain certain equipment/facilities. Must demonstrate compliance with policies, procedures and regulations of the Animal Resource Center, IACUC, Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines and other applicable regulatory guidelines for which essential training will be provided.

  • Will involve travel to meetings or conferences if secured travel funding.

  • Must be willing to adjust working hours according to the nature of ongoing experiments and many times work extended hours to finish the experiments. Working on weekends and holidays are required depending on the ongoing experiments and need to accelerate data generation and data collections.

  Required Skills:

  Ÿ Good organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy and follow-through on assigned tasks.

  Ÿ Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team.

  Ÿ Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.

  Ÿ Good problem-solving skills; must demonstrate good analytical skills, sound judgment and good decision-making.

  Ÿ Ability to rely on and follow instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.

  Ÿ Ability to operate laboratory equipment and learn to operate new instruments

  Ÿ Familiarity with policies and procedures of lab and chemical safety

  Ÿ Knowledge in Microsoft Office, database applications, and with internet navigation.

  Ÿ Willingness to learn new techniques, procedures, processes, and software programs as needed.
