  Post-Doctoral Research Assistant

  Full time, fixed term for 3 year

  Brief JD:

  To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking research activities within the research project entitled: “To mate or to flee: neural mechanisms underlying action-selection”, led by Dr Carolina Rezaval (Principal Investigator, University of Birmingham).

  Main duties:

  The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below:

  Develop research objectives, revise and contribute to project development and design, in discussions with Principal Investigator (PI), to deliver on project aims.

  Plan, think, design and execute experiments to deliver on project aims.

  Learn new methods/techniques, trouble-shoot and contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods to deliver on project aims.

  Acquire, analyse and interpret data.

  Take responsibility of own data management to prevent data loss.

  Keep up to date with research literature relevant to the project.

  Prepare findings for publication, e.g. by producing figures and manuscripts.

  Collect research data through a variety of research methods: such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, etc. as appropriate to project, and to deliver on research aims.

  Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at regular group meetings, seminars and as posters for internal and external workshops and conferences.

  Disseminate research findings for publication, by giving talks in research seminars, conferences, and writing manuscripts, etc.

  Supervise undergraduate and master students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline.

  Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration.

  Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, under supervision of the PI.

  Participate in outreach activities to communicate science to the public, as required by the funders.

  Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any other people who may be assisting with the team’s research. *

  Contribute to writing bids for research funding, together with the PI, as and if required.

  Person spec:

  First degree in Life Sciences/Biological Sciences/Genetics/Cell Biology/Neuroscience/Biochemistry or related disciplines, and either a PhD or equivalent research experience in one of such related disciplines.

  High level analytical capability.

  Ability to communicate complex information clearly.

  Fluency in relevant techniques or methods, and ability to contribute to developing new ones, within the disciplines mentioned above (for example, either in molecular biology, behaviour, live imaging or genetics).

  Experience either working with Drosophila, calcium imaging and/or molecular biology would be desirable.

  Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively.

  Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.

  Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,395 to £39,609. With potential progression once in post to £42,036 a year.
