  Job Description

  Through its research on climate change and food security, WorldFish intends to provide new knowledge on how to make fisheries and aquaculture systems more resilient to environmental constraints, securing a better future for the people that depend on those systems. Climate variability and change can impact fisheries and aquaculture directly, by influencing production quantities and efficiency, or indirectly, by influencing the market price of fish or the costs of goods and services required by the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

  The fellow will provide substantive research inputs into climate change and variability research within the WorldFish and CGIAR Research Programs, especially on a collaborative research project on Climate Information Services for farmers and fishers with the CGIAR Research Programs CCAFS and Fish Agri-food Systems (FISH).

  The fellow will also coordinate a project on climate information services for farmers and fishers, reporting directly to the country director and also working closely with the program leader of Resilient Small Scale Fisheries and other global Scientists based at various WorldFish offices. The position will focus 60% of time on Bangladesh climate change research; 20% on India and Myanmar; and 20% more global research.

  Key Responsibilities

  •                Conduct research on environmental drivers and vulnerabilities to climate change and variability within fish production systems and value chains.

  •                Design and implement field activities with partners to test interventions in managing vulnerabilities, with particular emphasis on climate and weather-related risks and information services.

  •                Collect data sets from multiple sources and scales, and to ensure that the data collected through ongoing projects are of publishable standard, well-organized in databases and are easily accessible by other project team members.

  •                Develop capacity of local staff in the data collection, quality, management and analysis.

  •                Lead peer-reviewed scientific publications (at least two per year) from assigned project activities, and co-author peer

  reviewed publications as appropriate.

  •                Lead and develop in collaboration with Bangladesh staff communication outputs appropriate to showcase events, peer reviewed publications, development impacts.

  •                Provide substantive technical inputs to preparation of new project proposals.

  •                Assist Bangladesh staff with writing project documents and reports in English language.

  •                Support project team meetings and M&E activities regarding overall program planning and reporting to bilateral donors as well as WorldFish headquarters.

  Requirements

  •                Ph.D in Fisheries or Climate Change Research or Farming Systems or another discipline related to environmental impacts on aquaculture and aquatic systems

  •                Proven ability to design and implement novel research activities on diverse aspects of climate change, aquaculture or fishery systems.

  •                Knowledge of ICT, digital services and their application in R4D and research and extension

  •                Demonstrated experience and expertise in statistical analysis, quantitative/qualitative questionnaire survey design, and data collection and management.

  •                Experience in synthesizing results from disparate studies.

  •                Highly developed skills in planning and executing field research in the aquatic environment.

  •                Proven ability to work in remote rural locations in tropical environment.

  •                Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in multi-cultural, interdisciplinary teams as well as develop close and effective working relationships with a range of partners.

  •                Competency with quantitative research analytical tools, methodologies and analyses.

  •                Ability and willingness to lead and carry out field work in developing countries.

  •                Working knowledge and experience in Bangladesh will be an advantage.

  Benefits

  This is an Internationally Recruited Staff (IRS) position with annual salary ranging between USD 43,000 – USD 47,000 per annum. WorldFish's IRS shall receive comprehensive benefits including (but not limited to) housing allowance*, relocation and repatriation assistance*, dependent education allowance*, home leave entitlement*, comprehensive insurance coverage for staff and eligible dependents, and pension/provident fund contribution.

  The position will be based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The initial employment contract will be for a two (2) years, with possibility for renewal depending on performance of and the availability of funding.
