The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

PhD Position and a Post Doc

Background and tasks:
GAIN is designed to support the ecological intensification of aquaculture in the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA), with the dual objectives of increasing production and competitiveness of the industry, while ensuring sustainability and compliance with EU regulations on food safety and environment.

The main objectives of GAIN are the development and optimization of sustainable feeds, without increasing the pressure on land and fish stocks; to add value to cultivation, by means of innovative processes; improvement of the management of finfish and shellfish farms, in terms of FCR, fish welfare and reduction of wastes and to support integrated policies and address current barriers to the implementation of the principles of circular economy in aquatic production.

You will be involved mainly in the design of feeds based on micro‐ and macroalgae, fish by‐products, and emerging ingredients, and in testing test these feeds on a range of key finfish species and farming systems, especially in RAS. In addition, new (SMART) sensors to be included in the operation of RAS devices will be included.

We are looking for an enthusiastic PostDoc researcher who has a strong interest in aquaculture, development of sustainable feeds as well as in improving European aquaculture systems.

 PhD in marine biology, ecology, aquaculture or related disciplines Experience with maintenance of recirculation aquaculture systems, finfish husbandry, feed formulation, experimental design and planning Experience in analysis of growth and health parameters of finfish in aquaculture Interest in self-contained research, presentation and publication of scientific data Very good English language skills written and spoken Good standard computer software skills (MS-Office-products) Interest and capacity for teamwork, international, inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration Willingness and capability to participate in seagoing expeditions        

 

Requirements PhD Position referencing code 103/D/Bio-2:

We are looking for an enthusiastic young researcher who has a strong interest in aquaculture, development of sustainable feeds as well as in improving European aquaculture systems.

 M. The position is limited to 3 years and will start on 1st October 2018. The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD Bund), salary level 13 (66%) for the PhD and salary level 13 (50%) for the Post Doc. The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
