Job Description

Engineering Education Fellow, Department of Bioengineering

The Bioengineering Department at Stanford University is inviting applications for an Engineering Education Fellow to work with committed faculty in transitioning Bioengineering core courses from traditional lecture/problem set courses into active learning experiences and to re-imagine and retool our core curriculum. This is a unique opportunity to join an exciting and collaborative department and to help define the future of Bioengineering education.

Strong applicants will typically have a PhD in Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, Biophysics, or a related engineering/scientific field, along with demonstrated interest and experience in education and how learning works. Experience with course and educational content development and/or in facilitating interactive learning is desirable, though not required.

The Fellow will join a community of other new Science and Engineering Education Fellows at Stanford, across disciplines from Physics, to CS, to Biology. The Fellow will get training in active learning and assessment methodologies and will directly engage in course/content (re)development with faculty, preparing the Fellow for further opportunities as an educator in the Department of Bioengineering or elsewhere.

The primary focus of the Fellow will be on improving student learning in core courses across the Bioengineering curriculum. The Fellow’s role will generally include the following course-specific elements in the quarters before, during, and after the course: facilitate the identification, development, and/or improvement of learning goals for the course; research and improve or develop measures of students’ relevant prior knowledge; work with the faculty instructor to develop activities, problem sets, pre-class preparation assignments, and other curricular materials that target the learning goals; co-lead some portion or set of in-class activities; develop instruments to assess the effectiveness of course elements and incorporate corrections; document and archive course materials in a shared repository that facilitates collaboration and modular sharing with other faculty.

In addition to this focus on core course improvement, the Fellow will participate in or lead other learning-related initiatives, for example the development and integration of modern online education technology into the curriculum. The Fellow may also join department instructors and leadership in an ongoing process of restructuring and reinventing the Bioengineering core curriculum.

Finally, the Engineering Education Fellow in Bioengineering may have the opportunity to co-create and co-lead new courses, depending on the Fellow’s background, and the goals and interests of the Fellow and the department.

The appointment begins on or before July 31, 2018, for a two-year term that the department plans to extend for one additional year depending on programmatic need and job performance. Position title and starting salary will depend on the candidate’s level of experience—Lecturer or Postdoctoral Fellow are among titles that could fit this opportunity.

Applicants should submit the following materials: a letter that addresses interest in the opportunity and qualifications, including any relevant experience in course development and in science/engineering education, learning, and pedagogy; a current curriculum vitae; a teaching statement; and a summary of student, peer and/or other teaching evaluations.

In addition, applicants should include contact information for three references and arrange for at least one letter of recommendation (not more than three) to be submitted by the reference writer(s). At least one letter writer should address the applicant’s experience or qualifications/promise as an educator. If the applicant has not yet completed the Ph.D., one letter writer should address the status of dissertation progress toward completion by the end of June 2018.

Application materials should be submitted via email to: bioe_seef_apps@stanford.edu.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and we will begin scheduling interviews by late May 2018.

For further information about the position, please send questions to: bioe_seef_apps@stanford.edu.
