PhD and Postdoc Positions in Computational Biophysics : Saarbrücken, Germany

PhD or Postdoc in Computational Biophysics

Several PhD and one postdoc position are available in group of Prof. Jochen Hub at Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany. The Saarland University is a research university of international renown with an excellent research environment for biophysics. Our group applies computer simulations to study the structure, function, and dynamics of biological Macromolecules. Payment for PhD positions will be according to TV-L E13 (65%), and the employment will be limited to 3 years. Payment for the Postdoc position will be according to TV-L E13 (100%), and the employment will be limited to 2 years.

Group website: https://biophys.uni-saarland.de/

Projects

The positions are available in the group of Prof. Jochen Hub, in the field of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of bimolecular systems. Possible projects include simulations of virus-membrane interactions, simulations of large protein/DNA complexes, and free-energy calculations of pore formation in membranes. The simulations are conducted on the group’s computing cluster, which currently holds ~1800 CPU cores and 80 GPUs, and which will be greatly expanded in the next months. The projects are embedded into collaborations to experimental groups in Saarbrücken, Göttingen, and Paris. The PhD candidate will typically become a member of the local Graduate School, providing a stimulating environment for the PhD studies. The detailed direction of the project will be decided together with the applicant.

Applicant

We are looking for highly motivated and team-oriented fellows. The applicant should have a degree in physics, physical chemistry, biophysics, or a related subject. Postdoc applicants should have a PhD. Experience in molecular dynamics, programming, scripting, or Linux/Unix-like environments is beneficial. Most important is a strong interest in molecular biophysics.

Please send your full application to Jochen Hub (jochen.hub@physik.uni-saarland.deuntil June 3rd, 2018. Please include as a single PDF a cover letter (including a brief statement of motivation), a CV, all academic certificates (including all course records), and the names of 2 references who are willing to write a letter of recommendation upon request. Applicants for a PhD position should also send a copy of their university entrance exam (according to the German Abitur). We request that you send us copies of your documents, as no returns will be made. We will destroy the documents after a holding period of five months.
