Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellow position in the laboratory of Dr. Lawrence T. Reiter, Ph.D. in the Department of Neurology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN. This highly motivated postdoctoral fellow will study the mechanism by which over-expression of UBE3A causes seizures at the genetic and cellular levels and also conduct a small molecule screen in Drosophila melanogaster to identify compounds that can suppress or enhance seizure phenotypes. To achieve this goal we developed a fly model of Dup15q syndrome and employ approaches including molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, genetics and bioinformatics. This position is for a one-year appointment, but has the potential to be renewed.

Qualifications

The candidate must have obtained his/her Ph.D. degree in Genetics, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or similar field. Research experience in the areas of Drosophila genetics, cell biology and molecular biology is required. We are expecting a motivated individual with the ability to work independently, as well as part of a research team. The candidate must have acquired a solid publication record and have excellent laboratory skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills in English are required. The candidate will play a major role in the preparation of manuscripts and grants that arise from this work. The anticipated start date will be June 1, 2018.

Candidates should have experience in Drosophila husbandry, crossing-schemes, genotyping, and phenotyping. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of Drosophila behavior assays, electroretinograms, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, PCR, Western blotting, gene cloning and other molecular biology techniques. Experience in Drosophila models of human disease is preferred.
