Volcanic Risk Solutions, part of Massey University's School of Agriculture and Environment (http://www.massey.ac.nz/massey/explore/departments/school-agriculture-environment/school-agriculture-environment_home.cfm) invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship contributing to the ambitious, multidisciplinary MBIE Endeavour-funded project "Te Awe Mapara - Towards a National Volcano Hazard Model under Climatic Changes" led by Massey University and GNS Science. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of geohazard science, contributing to next-generation impact forecasting for volcanic eruptions by integrating probabilistic hazard models with vulnerability and recovery analysis.
He angitūtanga - The opportunity
In this fixed-term (three year) role based in Palmerston North, you will join the world-renowned Volcanic Risk Solutions (VRS) group, an impact-driven team conducting applied volcanology research across Aotearoa New Zealand and globally. You will also collaborate with leading hazard scientists at the University of Canterbury.
Ngā kawenga - Key responsibilities:
• Conduct advanced research in probabilistic and/or computational modelling of volcanic hazards
• Contribute to cross-institutional collaboration, research dissemination, and end-user impact
• Support postgraduate students and research coordination within VRS and the wider project team
• Ensure research excellence through robust methodology, rigorous documentation, and ethical practice
Ko wai koe - About you
We are looking for an independent thinker and future thought leader with:
• a PhD in earth sciences (preferably volcanology) or statistics
• previous experience and interest in probabilistic and/or computational hazard modelling
• proficiency with R, Python, or Matlab
• a strong publication record in international scientific journals
• excellent communication and teamwork skills
• experience in vulnerability modelling and familiarity with volcanic hazard contexts will be highly regarded.
