Position Summary:

A rapidly expanding neuroscience lab at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, in collaboration with the Center for Brain Science and Neurodegenerative Diseases, the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, and the Department of Biomedical Sciences, is seeking motivated candidates for two postdoctoral scientist positions. These positions are available immediately to contribute to multiple NIH-funded projects exploring glia-neuron interactions and their role in mediating the effects of genetic and environmental risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain injury on olfactory function in transgenic mouse models. The ultimate goal is to uncover the neurobiological mechanisms underlying olfactory processing in both healthy and diseased states.

These dynamic projects utilize cutting-edge technologies such as optogenetics, integrated with in vitro and in vivo neurophysiology, chemogenetics, and in vivo calcium imaging in behaving animals, alongside behavioral assays to elucidate functional and pathological mechanisms. Additional methodologies include whole-brain neuroanatomical tracing to map neural connections using advanced microscopy techniques like light-sheet imaging, as well as immunohistochemistry with confocal microscopy to examine circuit organization and dysfunctions within the central nervous system. Furthermore, cell and molecular biology and RNA sequencing approaches will be employed to assess neuroinflammation in the brain under neurodegenerative, traumatic, or environmental toxic conditions.
