About the role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and talented individual at the post-doctorate research level to join the faculty of Engineering and Design at the University of Bath, UK, under the supervision of Drs Thomas Rodding Kjeldsen and Bernardo Castro Dominguez. This will be a full-time, fixed term position for a period of 11 months.

We seek candidates with a PhD degree (or those expecting to obtain one before the position's start date) in electrical/electronics, civil, or environmental engineering, data science, or related quantitative disciplines.

The appointee will contribute to the new NERC-funded GP4Streets project (DIY Greening Prescription for Climate Adaptation in Urban Streets) in delivering field monitoring data and embedding such data into hydrological modelling approaches, including AI supported meta-models.

Information and application

Please submit an online application that includes the following:

A one-page cover letter mapping your motivation and skills to the job profile.

A maximum two-page CV detailing your education (including grades) and scientific achievements.

A 1–2-page list of your journal and conference publications, along with any reports written. Please include a brief description (no more than 150 words) of your two best publications, highlighting the scientific breakthroughs and skills used or developed.

Two references, including one from your PhD advisor, if possible.

For informal enquiries please contact Dr Thomas Kjeldsen at trk23@bath.ac.uk. The interviews for the shortlisted candidates are expected between the end of April 2025 or soon after.

As a member of Research Staff at the University of Bath, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

About you

This role requires expertise in big data analysis and hydrological modelling, complemented by advanced statistical skills using R and Python. It involves monitoring and modelling the effectiveness of green urban infrastructure in mitigating water pollution and urban flooding, making field research sampling or laboratory experience beneficial. The ideal candidate is a self-driven, independent individual, capable of logging, cleaning, sharing, assessing and interpreting data, as well as writing efficiently for publication in top-tier journals. Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality reports and meet deadlines is essential. The position entails collaboration with PhD students and postdocs, including organising and participating in field experimental campaigns.

The appointee will work closely with other team members, particularly a local PhD-level mathematical innovation research specialist, external project collaborators, and may undertake short visits to partner institutions for collaborative research activities.

The candidate should be motivated and enthusiastic about working in a multidisciplinary environment, with flexibility to adapt to various projects and activities as required. Experience in team collaboration, public engagement, and working with diverse partners is essential. Strong written and spoken English skills are required, and a UK/EU/international driver’s license is a bonus. We are committed to diversity and inclusion and encourage applications from underrepresented groups in academia
