Postdoctoral Researcher in Experimental Physical Chemistry of Natural Gas Hydrates

IFREMER - French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea

Brest, France

Main tasks

The primary responsibility of the researcher entails working alongside the CYBER team leader and supporting the scientific leader of the ANR Hydraclay research project. The overarching goal of Hydraclay research program is to investigate how sediment mineralogy and interstitial fluid salinity affect hydrate formation and growth. This endeavour seeks to enhance the accuracy of geophysical models commonly used to estimate hydrate-bound methane, by incorporating detailed formation mechanisms and cage occupancy at nano- and microscale, mineral and ionic factors influencing hydrate morphology and distribution, and the impact of gas flow rate on cage occupancy.

The work of the postdoc will focus on understanding the mechanisms of formation and accumulation of natural gas hydrates within geological substrates, specifically clays and sands. This involves replicating natural hydrate formation conditions encompassing thermodynamic stability, surrounding fluid geochemistry, and sediment mineralogy. The research aims to elucidate the influence of sediment mineralogy and interstitial fluid salinity on hydrate formation and growth.

In addition to his/her primary role within the Hydraclay team, the postdoctoral researcher will also support project endeavours by aiding team members (Ifremer, PHENIX, and LLB) during x-ray and neutron scattering experiments at the ESRF or Soleil Synchrotron facilities. Additionally, he/she could be involved in the development of an analytical tool tailored for the detection and characterization of high-pressure gas hydrates using acoustic waves.

Main activities

He/she will be responsible for laboratory high-pressure experiments to study the influence of gas flowrate on hydrate formation kinetics, distribution and morphology (habit) from natural matrices collected in the Black Sea;

He/she will participate in the preparation and characterisation of sand/clay mixtures and their water/salt content in collaboration with the LLB and PHENIX;

He/she will work with the ALMA team to integrate the new data into existing geophysical models, and draw conclusions from this integration.

Network

Internally: other Geo-Ocean teams, in particular ANTIPOD and ALMA, REM RDT research units and other Ifremer research units and departments;

Externally: LLB (Laboratoire Léon Brillouin at UMR 12 CEA-CNRS), PHENIX (at Sorbonne University, Paris), IUEM, and other university and INSU partners. Also, external industrial partners or international organisations following participation in Geo-Ocean collaborative projects.

Required Knowledge, skills, and characteristics

Initial training, professional experience and specific skills:

Doctorate or PhD degree in physical-chemistry, thermodynamics, chemical engineering, geology, petroleum engineering or equivalent;

Strong aptitude for experimental work, particularly at high pressure;

Desired knowledge of experimental methods for studying gas hydrates;

Expertise in the implementation and development of analytical methods;

Experience in sedimentology, mineralogy, and/or thermodynamics would be beneficial.

Personal qualities (interpersonal skills):

Ability to listen and make suggestions, good dialogue and interpersonal skills;

A sense of responsibility; scientific and organisational rigour;

Sense of general interest, team spirit and autonomy;

A taste for innovation and the ability to establish collaborations.
