Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)

Job Description

Acknowledgement of Country

CSIRO acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land, sea and waters, of the area that we live and work on across Australia. We acknowledge their continuing connection to their culture and pay our respects to their Elders past and present. View our vision towards reconciliation

The Opportunity

·         Do you have a PhD in mathematical modelling or data science?

·         Exciting 3-year opportunity based at either Canberra or Perth.

·         Join CSIRO in leading innovation through solving challenges and identifying opportunities!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

As CERC Fellow, your research will focus on the modelling of surface soil water and temperature dynamics and their representation and parameterisation in simulation models and how they affect the establishment of crops.  The role will involve combining mathematical modelling techniques and new developments in data science with soil physics and agricultural micrometeorology to improve our ability to model the fine scale (in space and time) dynamics of surface soil water and temperature.

CSIRO has championed efforts to identify opportunities to modify wheat and canola growth to solve these challenges, including the development of deep sowing of long coleoptile wheat genetics and long hypocotyl canola. The research undertaken by the CERC Fellow will support two multi-organisational project teams located across Australia who will deliver industry-focused insights and farmer-directed tools aimed at optimising canola and wheat establishment to increase the reliability of greater crop production in changing climates.

Your duties will include:

·         Critiquing and proposing improved ways of representing or parameterising the processes that affect surface soil water and temperature dynamics in agricultural systems

·         Collating, formatting and managing data sets on surface soil water and temperature dynamics so they can be used in testing new simulation capacity or parameterisation procedures in APSIM NextGen.

·         Working with the project teams to quantify through simulations the dynamics of surface soil water, temperature and soil strength as it relates to seedling establishment.

·         Recognising opportunities for innovation and generate new theoretical perspectives by pursuing new ideas/approaches and networking with research colleagues across a range of disciplines

·         Communicating results to scientific peers and stakeholders through publications, workshops, demonstrations, etc.

Location: Canberra, ACT or Perth, WA

Salary: AU$92k - AU$101k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: Specified term of 3 years

Reference: 93192

To be considered you will need:

·         A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as mathematical modelling or data science with an agricultural, environmental and/or hydrological application, soil water, crop growth or farming systems modelling, soil physics or agricultural micrometeorology. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.

·         A record of science innovation and creativity, including the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.

·         Demonstrated ability to conceptualise, run and evaluate mathematical process-based models, and interpret their outputs.

·         Demonstrated knowledge and application of contemporary data management and analysis approaches (such as using R, python, javascript, etc.), and programming (e.g. C#).
