YOUR TASKS

·  The Postdoctoral position is offered within the context of the ERC-funded project CAUSALITY (https: // research.flw.ugent.be/en/projects/causality). The goal of the project is to investigate causes of language change and conservativity using formal theoretical modeling, artificial agent simulations, and empirical data from historical treebanks of three West Germanic languages: Dutch, English, and Low German. In addition to the theoretical objectives, the project aims at significantly enlarging an existing small treebank of historical Dutch.

·  Postdoctoral research objectives include:

·  Syntactic and semantic analysis of the strategies of subject encoding in West Germanic languages based on historical treebank data;

·  Statistical analysis of quantitative data from historical treebanks;

·  Game-theoretic modeling of the subject encoding strategies;

·  In addition to the theoretical questions, the Postdoctoral researcher is expected to be closely involved in the building of a historical treebank of Dutch.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

·  A thesis-based doctorate (obtained max. 6 years ago. This term of 6 years is determined by the date written on the above-mentioned required diploma) in theoretical or computational linguistics.

·  Experience with the Generative grammar framework and formal semantics as witness by publications.

·  Experience in statistical analysis of linguistic data, including experience with R.

·  Experience in applying game theory in linguistic modeling is an asset, but not a prerequisite.

·  Deep interest in language variation and change.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

·  We offer you a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 3 years.

·  Your contract will start on 1/09/2023 at the earliest.

·  Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master's degree) or salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate). Click here for more information about our salary scales.
