Job Description Summary:

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) supports the research infrastructure and facilitates several institutional research initiatives. Postdoctoral scholar appointments are available as part of a HRSA-funded National Research Service Award (NRSA) at GW for individuals with career interest in primary care research (T32).

We are currently accepting applications for three positions with appointments to begin between July and September 2023. The positions are temporary research training positions, to last for a minimum of 2 years, in which the incumbent plays a substantive role in planning and conducting research by designing and conducting experiments in an area relevant to primary care. In collaboration with faculty mentors, this role will participate in the planning of independent research, will analyze and interpret data, will disseminate results, will represent the university at conferences and scientific meetings, and may develop new theories and methodologies. This position may also assist faculty mentors in the conduct of established research and/or direct research staff. This role performs work under the supervision of experienced researchers Trainees may be assigned and receive financial supervision of experienced researchers. Trainees may be assigned and receive financial assistance for research-related coursework, and additional support is available for trainee-related expenses (e.g., conference travel}.

The overall goal of the George Washington University (GW) Primary Care Research Training Program (P-CART} is to develop researchers who are prepared to generate, test, and disseminate primary care-oriented interventions that aim to improve health and health equity. It is essential to equip the next generation of primary care researchers with the knowledge, competencies, experience, and leadership to uncover new knowledge and drive effective translation of best evidence into practice across health promotion, disease and injury prevention, workforce innovation, health care transformation, and population health. P-CART addresses the US Department of Health and Human Services clinical priority of “transforming the workforce – targeting the need” with a curriculum and research career development activities designed to prepare a professional cadre of trainees with the capabilities to address significant issues in primary care. Primary care research is research that informs a wide range of issues related to primary care practice and policy, including the quality, costs, and outcomes of primary care; patient-provider communication; generalist-specialist issues; workforce issues; and access to care, including disparities in care. P-CART will also consider candidates pursuing biomedical or behavioral research that is relevant to primary care. The funding agency will review and must approve all research topics/projects. Trainees must attend a national HRSA meeting. Postdocs will design, organize and conduct specialized and advanced experiments using established scientific protocols, troubleshoot and design new protocols, summarize findings and publish results in research journals, under the general supervision of a faculty member. In some cases, postdocs will assume general responsibility for general scientific operations in the lab, and/or provide supervision and guidance to laboratory staff, trainees and other researchers.

A Postdoctoral Scholar:

• holds a PhD or equivalent degree;

• develops skills by engaging in a mentored training relationship with a member of the university faculty;

• receives financial support in the form of a fellowship or stipend, paid by GW on behalf of an external sponsor and where the external sponsor does not allow the employment by GW; and

• has a limited term of up to five years at GW.

Postdoctoral scholars come to George Washington University (GW) with fellowship aid to develop their scholarly competence. They work under the supervision and mentorship of GW faculty members and use the facilities of the Institute.

In collaboration with experienced researchers, this role will participate in the planning and conduction of discovery research, data analysis and interpretation, preparation of materials for publication, presentations at conferences and meetings, and may develop new theories and methodologies. This role can expect timely advice as to research directions and career planning for a future independent career. Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
