Postdoctoral position in Electronic Literature at the Center for Digital Narrative (CDN).

University of Bergen

The Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies invites applications for a three-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Electronic Literature commencing from September 1st, 2023, or as agreed. The position is for a fixed-term period of three years.

About the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies

The Department offers research-based teaching within a wide span of study programs, including Digital Culture, Art History, Theatre Studies, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Scandinavian Languages and Literature, Old Norse Studies, and Norwegian as a Second Language and Norwegian Languages Courses for international students and employees at the University of Bergen. Beginning in the fall of 2023, the Department is proud to host the Center for Digital Narrative (CDN), a Norwegian Center of Excellence.

The position will be affiliated with the Center for Digital Narrative. The Center focuses on algorithmic narrativity, interactive environments, materialities, and shifting cultural contexts in which digital narratives are received and processed. CDN investigates the ways that the interactions of human authors and non-human agents renew narrative forms, how digital narratives have changed over time, and how textual materialities and cultural contexts are now reshaping the use and function of digital narrative.

CDN is a dynamic research environment housed in the heart of the University of Bergen campus. At the time of launch, the center will house 12 faculty members, three administrative personnel, seven Ph.D. Fellows and two Postdoctoral Fellows. The activities of the center include research group meetings, interactions with international research leaders in digital narrative, researcher training, PhD summer schools, frequent symposia and exhibitions.

Work tasks:

The Center for Digital Narrative is adapting an extensive open-access platform, the ELMCIP Electronic Literature Knowledge Database, to serve as a lasting research environment that will document current research in the broader category of exploratory, digital narrative. The database will also encompass emerging narrative forms that are increasingly found in computer games, social media, computational systems, and extended reality narratives.

The applicant is expected to develop this database and conduct independent research based on digital humanities analyses of genres, histories, technological and cultural contexts of electronic literature.

The applicant is also expected to survey international, multilingual databases documenting electronic literature, digital narrative, and related topics.

The applicant will help develop one or more independent grant proposals for future research with support from CDN.

The applicant will collaborate with other members at the center and participate in and contribute to its seminars and events

Qualifications and personal qualities:

The position as postdoctoral research fellow requires a Norwegian doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign doctoral degree in literature, digital culture, or a related field. The doctoral dissertation must have been submitted for evaluation within the closing date of the application. The PhD degree must be obtained prior to appointment. Applicants without a Norwegian PhD degree will be evaluated based on the guidelines from the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT).

The applicant must both be able to work independently in a well-structured way and have good cooperation skills.

The applicant must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Experience in any of the following areas is considered an advantage:

Experience with the development of a research database.

Editorial experience, e.g., with a research journal or database.

Publications focused on electronic literature.

Digital Humanities methods, such as data analysis and data visualization.

Creative practice in electronic literature.

In the assessment, the main emphasis will be placed upon the quality of the project proposal as well as the candidate's academic qualifications (publications and relevant experience). Strategic considerations, motivation, and the applicant's personal suitability will also be taken into account.

About postdoctoral positions
