Position Description:

The Louisville Automation and Robotics Research Institute (LARRI) at Speed School of Engineering seeks a Senior Research Scientist to lead industrial project engagement in the area of industrial or service robotics and develop new educational programs. The ideal candidate is a well-prepared candidate with a Ph.D. degree in electrical, mechanical, computer science, or related discipline and possesses proven experience, with a well-demonstrated track record, related to the areas of robotics, automation, control and mechatronics. This is a term appointment and has fixed end dates. The total duration of this position may not exceed 5 years. The candidate will be mentored by Dr. Dan Popa, Professor for R&D, and by both Emmanuel Collins, Dean, College of Engineering and Tom Rockaway, Associate Dean of Programs and Initiatives for educational program development.

The successful candidate is expected to interact with the industry and develop R&D programs and projects related to collaborative robotics with applications to manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare. The candidate will write proposals to industry and government agencies, lead and manage R&D efforts to execute the projects and provide deliverables and training programs to sponsors. The senior research scientist is also expected to supervise teams of other engineers, graduate, and undergraduate students, and research associates as necessary for the completion of projects. The candidate may also work with LARRI faculty, support their R&D efforts, and participate in the commercialization of technology developed at the University.

Another important duty of the senior research scientist will consist of serving as Development Director of the Mechatronics track within a soon-to-be-established Applied Engineering program at the Speed School of Engineering. In this capacity, the candidate will help create the program's curriculum, equip the laboratories, recruit instructors, and develop and administer courses to the industrial workforce. The first project involves characterizing conductive polymer sensor arrays and mechatronic devices with applications to robotic skin. The second project involves building the stretchable optical fiber sensors and 3D printed structures incorporated with time of flight (TOF) sensors for area mapping. The third project is focused on developing and commercializing robot nursing assistants for future hospitals.
