The School of Social Sciences offers research and education in Business Studies, International Relations, Journalism, Economics, Public Law, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology and Political Science. The school specialises in how people interact, socially and psychologically, in terms of politics, economics, law, and the media. Research at the school ranges from individual wellbeing to interactions between nation states. We have nationally and internationally recognised researchers who head reseach projects in our strategic research areas, which include the Dynamics of Entrepreneurship; Art, Culture and the Economy; Social Movements; Public Procurement and Political Psychology.

As a postdoctoral research fellow in Social Work, you will join a research environment that offers multidisciplinary perspectives and an advanced curriculum. Job description This post-doctoral research fellowship is funded by the Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies and is located within the research project: “Sustaining Civil Society in the Context of Multiple Crises: Hubs of Engagement in Central and Eastern Europe and Sweden”. The project is running between 2023 and 2028 and is located at the department of Social Work at the School of Social Sciences. The project consists of an international and transdisciplinary research team. The project includes Poland, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Czechia, and Sweden, so we strongly recommend that your doctoral research has a geographical link to the Baltic Sea region and/or the post-communist area of Europe, and either offers a comparative approach or includes other countries in the region, that are not yet included in the project. We would like to encourage candidates who have knowledge and experience in using quantitative methods in studying digital data, e.g. social network analysis or social media analysis.

The duties of a postdoctoral research fellow primarily include research and taking part in the activities of the research group but may also include the development of research activities and participation in the academic community through assignments as reviewer, external expert and lecturer. Administrative duties may also occur (such as organisation of seminars, workshops and conferences, and planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of multidisciplinary research projects).

Qualifications An individual is qualified to apply for a position as a postdoctoral research fellow if they have a doctoral degree in Social Science, or a qualification from abroad that is equivalent to a doctoral degree. This requirement must be fulfilled at the time the decision on employment is made.

Primary consideration should be given to someone who was awarded the above qualifications within the three years prior to the deadline for application for employment as a postdoctoral research fellow. Someone who has a doctoral degree or a qualification from abroad that is equivalent to a doctoral degree from an earlier date may be considered if there are exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances are leave due to ill health, parental leave, positions of trust in trades union organisations, service in the Swedish armed forces, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical practice or other practice/commissions relevant to the subject.

The candidate must also have the personal skills necessary to do the job well and to represent the University in a way that benefits its activities.

For this position, a good ability to express yourself both verbally and in writing in English is required.

Research expertise is demonstrated through a scholarly thesis and other scholarly publications in the relevant subject area and participation in research projects.

Grounds for assessment During the evaluation of an applicant's eligibility, special emphasis is placed on previously completed written academic work (in particular the dissertation, research papers, and research publications) that is submitted.

The submitted research plan is also important for the assessment process. The research plan should contain a preliminary subject for the applicant's postdoctoral work, which briefly outlines its purpose, aims, theoretical perspectives, methods, and timeline for the study. The research plan should further explicate the relevance to the research project and clarify which countries in the Baltic Sea region and/or the post-communist part of Europe the research will focus on.

The following grounds for assessment have been established for this position (in order of importance). The below items must be documented.

research expertise in the field of civil society studies in post-socialist context;

independence and originality along with scientific maturity and critical attitude in the formulation and analysis of research problems;

theoretical and methodological awareness of the proposed research;

good cooperation skills;

demonstrated ability to work within set time frames;

experience of inter- or trans-disciplinary collaboration;

relevance of research proposal to the research project;

the proposed research project's relevance to the Baltic Sea region and/or post-communist countries in Europe.

Employment This position is full time and is limited to a period of 24 months. During this period, the position is fully funded. The salary is subject to an annual increase in accordance with university regulations. Start date as agreed.
