Postdoctoral Research Fellow

University of Exeter

The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to support the work of Professor Jacqueline Christmas. This UK Hydrographic Office funded post is available immediately, for a period of one year. The ideal candidate for this post will be a computer scientist with knowledge of oceanography and simulation, or an oceanographer with strong, proven skills in programming and software engineering.

In this project we will define and develop a maritime digital twin from which we will generate physically realistic simulations of waves on the sea's surface over time, and to do so at the resolution required to support a ship or boat motion simulator. We will start by looking at swell waves, but intend to incorporate wind and tidal flow effects as well.

One part of the project will be to design, develop and document programs to extract Sentinel-1 SAR data over time for a selected sea area. These data will be processed into localised wave climate, which will be included in the digital twin where it will be used to generate driving wave systems in simulations.

While we will be undertaking the development for a specific UK coastal area, the design will support any sea area. The localised wave climate from Sentinel-1 will be used to generate driving wave systems in simulations, but the design will also allow for real wave systems, recorded by satellite SAR or ground-based grazing incidence X-band radar, to be used to drive the simulator; this will allow us to compare/validate the simulations with/from the radar recordings.

This project is being undertaken for and in collaboration with the UK's Hydrographic Office (UKHO). UKHO is a world-leading centre for hydrography, specialising in marine geospatial data to support safe, secure and thriving oceans, and they will be providing bathymetry data on which the digital twin will be based. For candidates able to pass basic UK security vetting, they offer the chance to spend some of the time working at their site in Taunton, Somerset.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events, particularly for and in close collaboration with the UKHO.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in the relevant area and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will be able to design and develop the digital twin and its associated simulations, so strong programming skills are required, preferably in Matlab or Python. Knowledge of oceanography, in terms of sea surface waves and their characteristics, would be ideal.
