Postdoctoral Researcher – Biomedical Engineering, School of Engineering at NUI Galway (NUIG RES 158-22)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the position  of a full time fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher with Dr Eimear Dolan’s team in Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Ireland Galway. The successful candidate will carry out research on active therapeutic medical devices, with a combination of basic and translational studies. This position requires in-depth knowledge related to the pre-clinical assessment of drug and cell-based therapies and the integration of implanted medical devices. The position is available from 1st September with flexibility on start date for 24 months.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join a dynamic and motivated team developing advanced treatment strategies for diseases such as Type 1 Diabetes and Ovarian Cancer. The candidate will be responsible for in vitro, in ovo and in vivo assessment of advanced therapies and active medical devices.

Duties and responsibilities:

•Design and perform experiments and analyses relevant to therapeutic medical devices and collaborate with scientific groups locally, nationally and internationally

•Lead the design, execution and analysis of in vitro, in ovo and in vivo experiments

•Mentor undergraduate and/or graduate students who work on similar research projects and provide training in relevant research methods

•Publish per-reviewed articles and present findings at national/international scientific meetings

•Proactively identify risks and technical solutions

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

•PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Immunology (or related field);

•Dynamic, creative thinker and problem solver interested in advanced cell therapies and/or active therapeutic medical devices;

•Flexible, self-motivated; ability to work independently and collaboratively;

•Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including skill to produce information that is appropriately presented;

•Experience designing and conducting in vivo assessments OR commitment to upskill and lead such studies.

Desirable Requirements:

•Strong track record in designing and executing in vitro assessments and molecular biology techniques;

•Experience in designing and executing in ovo assessments;

•Experience in the design and development of medical devices;

•Peer-reviewed publications.

Salary: €39,523 – €51,035 per annum pro rata for shorter and/or part-time  contracts (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).

Start date: 1st September 2022 with flexibility on start date.
