Description

Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience, $54,540-$75,000. Minimum annual salary rates are made based on the individual's Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: September 1st, 2022. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.

Position duration: The initial appointment for this position will be for three years with the possibility of renewal. MAXIMUM DURATION OF SERVICE IN A POSTDOCTORAL TITLE Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individual's postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.

Position description

The Natural Language Processing Program (nlp.ucsc.edu) in the Computer  Science and Engineering Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the Natural Language Processing Postdoctoral Researcher, under the direction of Research Professor Marilyn Walker. We seek outstanding applicants with research expertise in all areas of Natural Language Processing (NLP). The NLP Postdoctoral Researcher will be expected to contribute to the research profile of the NLP group. We also expect the successful candidate to support graduate students and other Postdoctoral Scholars as a peer mentor.

Campus Information Originally founded in 1997, Baskin Engineering (BE) is the first professional school at UC Santa Cruz. Over the past 20+ years, Baskin Engineering has become a unique 21st century school of engineering and technology, characterized by evolutionary growth fueled by on-going research opportunities that open new areas of intellectual inquiry. Baskin Engineering has grown to include six academic departments, a variety of research centers and institutes, and has ambitious plans for further programmatic growth. The focus of Baskin Engineering educational programming is to instill strong basic knowledge for sound practice in science and ethical engineering for the well- being of society, and its diverse curricula facilitate creative thinking and prepare students for productive and rewarding careers. Baskin Engineering is focused on building collaborative connections and expanding instruction and research activities for faculty and students at UC Santa Cruz, both at its Santa Cruz campus and at its campus in Silicon Valley, the international center of technological innovation.

The Natural Language Processing (NLP) Professional MS program is hosted by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. NLP is a key component of today's research and advanced development landscape and has applications in virtually every discipline, with current success stories including conversational interfaces, search, indexing, business intelligence, and computational advertising. The NLP MS program covers both breadth and depth in knowledge and skills required to be successful in the field of NLP. The goals of the program are to prepare students for positions as NLP Engineers, Machine Learning Engineers and Data Science Engineers. See nlp.ucsc.edu for more detailed information.

The NLP Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to become a key part of the team for the professional NLP MS program for a duration of three years with the possibility of renewal. The successful candidate will do research, attend faculty meetings, work with NLP faculty, PhD students and MS students. The program is offered from the UCSC Silicon Valley Campus located in the heart of Silicon Valley, the worldwide epicenter for industry and innovation in NLP. The UCSC Silicon Valley Campus opened in 2016 and the building features contemporary interior design with multiple classrooms, computer labs, and project rooms, along with an event center, sound studio, and television studio. NLP program faculty are also located at the UCSC Silicon Valley Campus.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Computer Science with a specialization in Natural Language Processing. The Ph.D. must be in hand at the time of the initial appointment.
