The Canadian Center for Vaccinology invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in vaccine safety research.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be supervised by Karina Top, MD, MS, lead of the Special Immunization Clinic (SIC) Network, co-lead for the International Network of Special Immunization Services (INSIS), and vaccine safety lead for newly formed Pediatric Outcomes Improvement through Coordination of Research Networks (POPCORN). Dr. Top is an Associate Professor in Pediatrics and Community Health & Epidemiology at Dalhousie University and Investigator at the Canadian Center for Vaccinology (CCfV). The Fellow will take a leading role to contribute to the management, coordination, and execution of a diverse range of research activities focused on vaccine safety for COVID-19 and other vaccines. The candidate will also have the opportunity to develop new research projects of mutual interest in consultation with Dr. Top.

The SIC Network is a network within the Canadian Immunization Research Network (CIRN) that aims to improve immunization practices for patients who had experienced adverse events following immunization and those who have medical conditions that may affect their response to immunizations. Current areas of focus include adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination and vaccination of immunocompromised patients. The SIC network is collaborating with INSIS on studies investigation the risk factors and pathogenesis of adverse events following COVID-19 vaccines.

POPCORN brings together pediatric health researchers from 16 research sites across Canada. Together, they will help protect children and youth against the serious health effects of the pandemic. POPCORN is leading a prospective cohort study of myocarditis and pericarditis following COVID-19 vaccination in children.

The candidate will require an interest in vaccine safety and vaccine epidemiology, and a strong background in Public Health/Epidemiology research methods and quantitative statistical analyses. Research activities will include but are not limited to: developing research questions, literature reviews, research design, data collection, data management and analysis, and data dissemination via conference presentations, reports, and peer-reviewed publications. Other responsibilities include coordination with other CCfV/CIRN/POPCORN staff, trainees and community partners as appropriate, preparing ethics applications and reports, and grant writing as needed. There will be an opportunity for the Fellow to develop leadership and project management skills, as well as to supervise students and collaborate with clinicians and other investigators nationally and internationally. The position is based in Halifax, NS, though remote work arrangements will be considered.

The successful applicant may work in-person on campus, primarily remotely, or perform a hybrid of the two as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position

Duties and Responsibilities:

  Work with the project team to develop research questions and conduct independent research activities. This includes, but is not limited to, literature reviews, research design, protocol development, submissions of ethics applications, data generation, analysis, and interpretation.

  Foster and maintain relationships with project collaborators internal and external to CCfV/CIRN/POPCORN.

  Take a leadership role in research management and coordination activities of ongoing projects and assist in the guidance of students and staff under the supervision of Dr. Top.

  Identify funding opportunities.

  Contribute to the writing and submission of grant applications.

  Contribute to the writing and submission of manuscripts and reports.

  Coordinate and attend meetings and foster communications with key stakeholders, research collaborators, practitioners, project advisory committee members, policymakers, and other partners.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  PhD or PhD-equivalent in public health, population health/epidemiology, or relevant health science background.

  Strong background in epidemiologic study designs and quantitative research

  Experienced in conducting independent data analysis using SAS® statistical analysis software. Experience with R is an asset.

  Competency in conducting research in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, Good Clinical Practice, and sponsor or agency guidelines under the oversight of the investigator.

  Strong competencies in MS Office software.

  Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated abilities to work both independently and as part of a team.

  Self-motivated with a strong ethic and the ability to manage multiple projects at once with minimal supervision while achieving specific goals within specific timelines.

  Demonstrated productivity based on published manuscripts is important.

  Strong attention to detail, organizational, problem-solving, and decision- making skills.

  Understanding of infectious diseases and vaccinology is an asset.

Salary Range/Pay Rate $50,000-70,000 per annum
