Looking for an opportunity to demonstrate your computational skills to contribute to Human Cell Atlas research to deliver key insights in human health?

The Cellular Genetics Programme is seeking a Computational Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) to support the Haniffa Group. The Programme is focused on cell- atlasing and aims to map tissues by combining single cell transcriptomics, spatial genomics and computational methodologies to build full-transcriptome three dimensional (3D) models of cells in their tissue context, with the long-term ambition of building a 3D whole-body atlas at single cell resolution.

About the Team:

MuzlifahHaniffa is a dermatologist pioneering the applications of single cell genomics technologies to understand human development, tissue homeostasis, immunity and disease pathogenesis. A major research goal of her laboratory is to decode the development and functional maturation of the human immune system and whole embryo development. The Haniffa Group's research within the Cellular Genetics Programme applies disruptive cutting-edge single cell and spatial genomics techniques to study human development and adult healthy and diseased tissues. You can find out more about Muzlifah's research here.

About the Role:

You will be responsible for analysing large single-cell genomics including spatial genomics datasets relating to the Human Cell Atlas research to deliver key insights. You will work collaboratively with wet lab biologists generating the data, other researchers including bioinformaticians in the Haniffa group, Cellular Genetics programme including IT team, EBI and international collaborators.

About you:

You understand key concepts in genomics, data processing and high-throughput data analysis. You will ideally have experience in the management and analysis of very large data sets, using or developing statistical/machine-learning. You work effectively within a team and independently.

Essential Skills

Technical Skill:

A PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics or related scientific discipline

Understanding and experience in the fields of genomics, data processing and high- throughput data analysis

Extensive experience in a research environment with an established track record of productivity

Proficiency in one or more scripting languages (C/C++, R, python)

Behavioural Skills:

Excellent communication and organisational skills

Proven independent working style, technical problem solving, data analysis and generation of novel ideas

Motivation and ambition to make a personal contribution to GRL research

Proven ability to work effectively within a team

Ability to work multi-task and organise own workload

Good attention to detail and record keeping

Demonstrates inclusivity and respect for all

Our PDFs:

As a PDF in the Cellular Genetics Programme, you will be joining a collaborative and cutting-edge environment. The Programme encourages everyone to network and to showcase their research, including at our weekly seminar series. In addition to support from the Sanger core areas of Scientific Operations, Management Operations and ICT, within the Programme the Cellular Genetics Operations teams provide comprehensive multidisciplinary support to help with everything from processing samples, delivering analysis pipelines, to assistance with fellowship applications. The Sanger Institute also supports PDFs by offering various training opportunities, chances to network, and has a PDF committee in place to ensure our PDFs are supported throughout their posts.
