Characterization of T cell mediated mechanisms of pathogenesis and viral control in the CNS

A funded postdoctoral position is available to develop a research program studying the immune mechanisms contributing to viral control and pathogenesis in the brain in HIV infection and other viral infections. The successful applicants will develop their research at the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute, OHSU, under the supervision of Dr Lydie Trautmann.

Dr Trautmann is interested in immune responses against viral infections, especially HIV infection, where she studies the cellular immune response in acute HIV infection and HIV cure studies to define the cellular mechanisms of HIV pathogenesis in the era of antiretroviral therapy and test new therapeutic strategies to induce HIV remission. Immunotherapies to eliminate persisting viral reservoirs are being evaluated but targeting viral reservoirs in the central nervous system presents unique challenges. The research program will be focused in human clinical trials in nonhuman primate models on defining immunomodulatory strategies that can be given safely without CNS toxicity and can boost the antiviral CD8 T cell response in the CNS, reducing viral reservoir seeding and persistence in the brain. Experimental approaches will cover cellular biology, immunology and virology.

Requirements

The applicant must have a PhD with research skills in the fields of immunology/immunopathology/infectious diseases, be strongly motivated by the study of virus/host interactions, be a team player and have good skills in communicating in English (oral and writing). Experience in neuroimmunology would be an important asset for this program.
