Job Description Summary

A postdoctoral associate position is available at Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) to conduct research on a wide range of coastal  processes and climate impacts on the Great Lakes system to promote resilient coastal communities. The appointment is for 12 months, with an option for renewal upon satisfactory performance.

Successful applicants would join a team of postdoctoral staff, undergraduate and graduate students advised by Dr. PengfeiXue, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environment Engineering, and Director of the Numerical Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Michigan Tech's Great Lakes Research Center. The applicant would select research topic(s) working with the supervisor on the following area: • Climate dynamics, regional climate modeling, and climate data analysis • Great Lakes water-ice-wave-sediment modeling and interactions • Great Lakes bio-physical processes and ecosystem modeling • Data assimilation and machine learning with applications to the Great Lakes region

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

• Review and synthesis relevant literature • Conduct numerical modeling and/or data analysis • Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals • Disseminate research at national and international conferences • Work and coordinate with other members of the research team including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and research collaborators.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Ph.D. in limnology, oceanography, atmosphere sciences, data science, or related field.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• A record of publication in leading peer-reviewed journals • Experience in  numerical modeling or climate data analysis • Experience with model-data  integration

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience in modeling RegCM/FVCOM/SWAN/WRF/XBeach and other similar models • Extensive experience in CMIP or other reanalysis dataset analysis • Experience in model development and coding

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

The candidate's research expertise must include one or more of the following: • Climate dynamics, regional climate modeling/data analysis • Ocean/lake-ice-wave-sediment modeling and interactions • Ocean/lake bio-physical processes and ecosystem modeling • Data assimilation in atmosphere/freshwater/marine systems • Machine learning with applications to geophysical science

We expect the postdoctoral associate to have the ability to work effectively in both numerical modeling and data analysis and to play an important leadership role in interdisciplinary research.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Strong oral and written communication skills and expertise in scientific writing including publications, reports, and grant writing.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

The Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC) provides state-of-the-art laboratories to support research on a broad array of topics.
