Post Doctoral Researcher, Center for Neutron Science

Apply now Job no: 497151 Work type: Staff Location: Newark Categories: Research & Laboratory, Full Time

Postdoctoral Scientist, Center for Neutron Science, University of Delaware

The University of Delaware Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (UD) is seeking a candidate for a post-doctoral position or research associate, depending on qualifications, in condensed matter physics. This position is a component of a major National Science Foundation infrastructure grant to significantly upgrade the existing neutron spin echo (NSE) spectrometer and instrument commissioning in collaboration with the instrument scientists and engineers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The candidate will be required to carry out studies of soft condensed matter systems, specifically lipid membranes structure and dynamics combining computer simulation and neutron scattering techniques. The primary experimental tools will be Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS), Neutron Reflectometry (NR) and Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering (QENS). Among QENS, NSE technique has been used to characterize elastic and viscous properties of lipid membranes, and the current project will expand understanding of such properties in more complex membrane components to mimic biologically relevant systems. Computer simulations will be used to develop atomistic to molecular understandings of diffusive and viscous properties of two dimensional membrane systems. The candidate will be expected to work with UD faculty, graduate students, and NIST scientists to develop educational materials necessary to train the next generation of instrument users, which includes lectures in summer school as well as developing online tutorials for NSE experiments. The candidate will be expected to present the result of his/her research at national and international conferences and use such opportunities to identify new NSE instrument users. The candidate will work together with UD faculty and the NSE project team members to develop the instrumentation and computation on this project. The successful candidate must have a PhD in a physical science, or engineering, excellent experimental skills, and good communication skills. Experiences in scattering techniques and/or computer simulation is desirable but not essential. The successful candidate will be stationed at NIST Center for Neutron Research, Gaithersburg, MD with regular travel to UD for research collaborations. The position is renewable yearly based on performance for up to three years.

Salary will be competitive based on experience and qualifications.

The position is available immediately, is for one year and is renewable, including benefits and a competitive salary based on qualifications. This position is open immediately.

Equal Employment Opportunity

Employment offers will be conditioned upon successful completion of a criminal background check. A conviction will not necessarily exclude you from employment.
