Job Description

Post Doctoral Fellow - (STA008136) Post Doctoral Fellow

Organization: H0092 Modern & Classical Languages

Description

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages at the University of Houston (UH) invites outstanding candidates from Classical Studies to apply for a Postdoctoral Fellowship. The purpose of this position is to advance the department's research and teaching profile. Successful candidates should demonstrate potential for publishing high quality research. They will be expected to pursue an independent research agenda that compliments existing strengths of the Department. As part of their duties, candidates will explore curricular development related to Classical Studies which can inform and expand the UH World Culture and Literatures Program offerings. In this context, special consideration would go to a scholar interested in the ancient Mediterranean and, ideally, familiar with Near Eastern, Indian, and Judaic cultures and can teach courses that incorporate those areas in a broadly defined ancient studies context.

We are also very interested in a scholar who can develop course content for core Classics classes that is linked to athletics and the culture of the body (in literature and the visual arts) in antiquity and its reception in the contemporary context. A strong candidate will have demonstrated ability to include digital humanities methodologies in research and teaching.

The fellow must be in residence at the University of Houston during the academic year, participate in department events and teach one undergraduate course per semester. The initial appointment will be for one year, with an option for reappointment for another year based on funding and performance.

The position begins 08/15/2022. Individuals should plan on having completed their doctorate degree and defended prior to start date. Compensation is commensurate with experience.

UH is a growing urban research institution and its student body reflects the racial, ethnic, and international diversity of the Houston metropolitan area. Located in the fourth largest city in the U.S., Houston is home to one of the largest medical centers in the world, numerous energy corporations, and a vibrant arts community.

The University of Houston is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Institution. Minorities, women, veterans, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Review of applications will begin on January 1, 2022 and continue until position is filled.
