At TU Dresden, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, at the Department of Geosciences, Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, the Junior Professorship in Environmental Remote Sensing offers a position as

Research Associate / PhD Student / Postdoc

(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

starting October 1, 2021. The position comprises 75 % of the fulltime weekly hours and is limited for 3 years. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz-WissZeitVG). The position offers the chance to obtain a further academic qualification (e.g. PhD / habilitation thesis).

Tasks: Within the DFG-funded project “RECOVERY”, you will investigate the influence of large-scale vegetation changes on the carbon cycle in northern ecosystems by model-data integration for phenology, photosynthesis, biomass production and vegetation dynamics with a dynamic global vegetation model, in situ and Earth observation data. You will gather, process and analyse remote sensing data; conduct, evaluate and analyse model simulations; develop and apply model-data integration methods; implement improved model formulations in the global vegetation model; apply atmospheric transport models; write and publish scientific publications and presentation at international conferences and workshops.

Requirements: university degree and, if applicable, doctoral degree in the fields of geosciences, environmental sciences or physics with focus on remote sensing or environmental modelling; knowledge in the analysis of remote sensing and climate data with R and/or Python; practical experiences in Linux/Unix; scientific compelling MSc thesis (PhD student) or first scientific publications (Postdoc); desirable are experiences in large-scale land surface modelling, optimization algorithms or machine learning; interest in global environmental change; high capacity for team work and communication skills; business fluent written and oral English skills. Knowledge in German language would be advantageous but is not required.
