英国斯特林大学博士后研究员

Postdoctoral Research Fellow on SAR remote sensing of floods Apply Post Details

Full time Fixed term for 7 months

The closing date for applications is midnight on Mon 23 August 2021 Interviews are expected to take place on Monday 30 August 2021

This role will require a Basic Disclosure check. An offer of employment will be subject to a satisfactory outcome of this process

This role is not eligible for sponsorship. Applicants require to have existing right to work in the UK

The University of Stirlingrecognises that a diverse workforce benefits and enriches the work, learning and research experiences of the entire campus and greater community. We are committed to removing barriers and welcome applications from those who would contribute to further diversification of our staff and ensure that equality, diversity and inclusion is woven into the substance of the role. We strongly encourage applications from people from diverse backgrounds including gender, identity, race, age, class, and ethnicity

The Post

We are looking for candidates with expertise in developing advanced methodologies using time series of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), including multi-modal processing (i.e., polarimetric). The successful candidate will develop processing stacks able to support real-time or near real-time monitoring of flooding in the Forth River catchment (UK), in the North Rupununi (Guyana) and in Colombo (Sri Lanka).

The short term position is funded by UK Space Agency (UKSA) and it is aimed at capitalising on work done in a previous UKSA project aimed at detecting flooded areas in the Rupununi for combatting malaria in the region.

Working alongside with scientists with expertise in hydrology, ecosystem ecology, and data science the postholder can expect to apply their skill set to provide real insights into this important scientific challenge as required by stakeholders (e.g. SEPA).

The postholder will have strong background in remote sensing specifically for radar satellites (e.g., Sentinel-1, ALOS-2, TanDEM-X). It is anticipated that the processing stacks developed will exploit different methods such as physical, statistical and machine learning approaches. The postholder will be well versed in applying remote sensing to monitoring and/or modelling of the environment.

Description of Duties

Develop processing stacks of multi-temporal and multi-modal SAR data to detect flooding using Sentinel-1 in 3 selected regions

Develop research objectives and play a lead role in relation to assigned specific projects, with guidance from senior colleagues as required

As part of the wider research team, develop new research methodologies and approaches

Write or contribute to publications or disseminate research findings using other appropriate media

Deliver presentations at conferences or exhibit work in other appropriate events

Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration

Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post

Essential Criteria

PhD (or equivalent industrial experience) in remote sensing (including SAR) or in an appropriate discipline such as Engineering, Physics, Computing, Environmental Science or equivalent

The enthusiasm and ability to solve complex problems using radar remote sensing

Strong programming skills in Python (or equivalent languages)

Excellent interpersonal skills including evidence of being responsible for a small research project or identified parts of a large project

Self-motivation, initiative and independence in thought and working

Desirable Criteria

Experience in using SAR for flood mapping, soil moisture retrieval, or vegetation mapping

Experience in the use of machine learning or statistical libraries for image analysis

Experience in data visualisation for scientific and/or non-scientific audiences in languages such as Python and/or R

Experience on working in collaboration with stakeholders to achieve project objectives

Behaviours and Competencies

The role holder will be required to evidence that they can meet the qualities associated with the following behavioural competencies, as detailed within the AUA Competency Framework.
