Cognitive Neuroscience of Exercise, Sleep, and Genetic Influences on Memory, Aging, and Alzheimer's Disease in Older African Americans.

We seek a postdoctoral research associate to join our lab at Rutgers University-Newark, just outside New York City, to work on cognitive and neuroimaging studies of how individual differences in exercise (or aerobic fitness), sleep, and genetics influence aging, memory and Alzheimer's disease in older African Americans. With funding from the National Institute on Aging at NIH, we are conducting cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of risk and resilience to cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease in African Americans, as well as interventional studies examining how physical activity and aerobic exercise reduce biomarkers for Alzheimer's risk. Other studies look at how sleep patterns relate to age-related cognitive decline, memory loss, and Alzheimer's risk. Our lab uses multiple methods including fMRI, genetics, cognitive, behavioral, fitness, EEG sleep monitoring (polysomnography), and health assessments.

We seek applicants with some or all of the following:

(1) Prior experience with experimental studies of exercise, sleep, genetics, memory, behavior and/or human brain function. We are especially interested in applicants with prior fMRI brain imaging experience.

(2) Rigorous training and experience in statistics, data analysis, and human experimental research methods.

(3) Prior experience writing and submitting academic papers and research grants.

(4) A strong interest and familiarity in working with minority populations, especially African Americans.
