Scientist (Tenure Track) Sample Delivery SLS and SwissFEL

Paul Scherrer Institute

Description

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2100 people.

For the Time-resolved crystallography group in the Laboratory of Biomolecular Research we are looking for a

Scientist (Tenure Track)

Sample delivery SLS and SwissFEL

Your tasks

You will work on the implementation and development of sample delivery systems for serial crystallography at the Swiss Light Source SLS and the Swiss X-Ray Free Electron Laser SwissFEL. Within an interdisciplinary team of scientists, you will support PSI efforts in using pump-probe and rapid mixing techniques to study how the structural dynamics of proteins are related to function. Your tasks will be:

  Implementation of automatic high-viscosity injectors for serial injection of microcrystals

  Development rapid-mixing solutions relying on solid supports or injectors

  Sample preparation for time-resolved experiments at SLS and SwissFEL

  Processing of serial crystallographic data

  Support of internal and external users at SLS and SwissFEL

  Writing of scientific publications and applications for research funding

Your profile

We expect a completed PhD degree in biochemistry, chemistry or physics with additional post-doctoral education seen as an extra qualification. The ideal candidate has experience with sample delivery and structural biology of membrane proteins using free electron lasers and / or synchrotron radiation documented by scientific publications. Knowledge of optical lasers, time- resolved spectroscopy or experience as beamline scientists are a plus.

We offer

Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.

This is a Tenure Track position. The employment contract will initially be limited to 3 years with the possibility to develop into an open-ended contract based on performance.
