Context of the Job:
Under the general direction of Dr. Ibra (Drew) Fancher (Principal Investigator), the Research Associate II will be an integral part and leader of the research team by i) ensuring proper safety procedures and protocols are followed by students and staff, ii) overseeing projects and data collection in the lab, and iii) training of students and staff in various experimental laboratory procedures. The Research Associate II will also oversee and coordinate undergraduate volunteers in the laboratory.
Major Responsibilities:
Lab Safety • Develop, with the Principal Investigator, a standard for lab safety including detailed lists of chemical reagents and biohazards, updating the online Environmental Health and Safety laboratory catalogue, and working with University EHS to adhere to general and lab-specific safety protocols. • Train, with the Principal Investigator, new lab members in stringent lab safety practices and protocols prior to work being performed in the lab.
Animal Care and Husbandry • Responsible for setting up breeders of various genetic models, exchanging feed for obesity models, injections/oral gavage, and conducting intervention models (e.g., exercise or diet restrictions). • Work with the Principal Investigator in adhering to the University of Delaware IACUC, generate protocol modifications, and submit renewals.
Cell Culture • Responsible for ensuring proper handling, propagation, and storage of individual cell culture lines. • Train students and staff (if required) in aseptic technique and propagate cell lines for use by lab members. Budgetary Responsibilities • Maintain a detailed itemized list of laboratory purchases from all lab staff and work with the Principal Investigator to maintain financial records of spending, overhead, and crucial lab needs. Research Projects • Lead one to two research projects that result in first author publications. If this is elected, and agreed upon by the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate II will do the following: o Conduct experiments and drive the data production for publications and grants. o Compile and analyze data and interpret results with the Principal Investigator. o Lead the experiments, preparation of manuscripts, and overall research goals of these projects.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferred, with minimum two years of research experience in a lab. • Preference will be given to applicants with experience handling/treating mice in a laboratory setting, animal husbandry, and past experience with transgenic mouse models. Applicant must be comfortable euthanizing mice. • Effective organizational and communication skills (verbal and written) • Ability to work well with others. • Ability to interpret and follow written and verbal instructions. • Requires excellent comprehension, communication, and grammatical skills in English and how to use knowledge in scientific articles. • Knowledge of research methodology, principles, and procedures of current technological development/trends. • Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies, of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment. • Willingness to learn new skills. • Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions, to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures. • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures, to develop and follow research methodology and protocol. • Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific research projects.
