Post Doc in Mechanical Engineering for Soft Robotics - (20000056)
Description
Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia – IIT is looking for a highly motivated candidate with a background in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, robotics, or a related area. Strong knowledge and experience of design and fabrication of soft-matter devices is an advantage. The successful candidate will join the Bioinspired Soft Robotics (BSR - https: // bsr.iit.it/) Research Line at IIT , which offers a uniquely collaborative scientific research environment and outstanding research facilities.
This Research Line, located at the Center for Micro-BioRobotics (CMBR) of IIT, aims at designing and developing new robotic solutions and advanced components by taking inspiration from Nature. The group works in a dynamic, international and multidisciplinary environment, combining engineering and biology and using plants and soft-bodied animals as biological models. Science-based research activities are combined with the development of application-driven robotic solutions and technology transfer.
The work will mainly focus on the study, design and prototyping of advanced soft robotic systems.
The ideal candidate should be proficient in mechanical design principles for robotic systems, with excellent hands-on practical skills and competences of advanced design tools (Siemens NX, SolidWorks or equivalent) and fast- prototyping techniques.
The position includes theoretical and hands-on research, collaborations with Post Docs, PhDs and MSc students, preparation of scientific publications and contribution to new grant proposals. The candidate must be capable to collaborate with a large, international and multidisciplinary team.
Specific responsibilities and skills required for the job include the following:
Concept design of soft robots, bioinspired soft robots, and related components;
3D drawing design;
Prototyping and troubleshooting of customized designs;
Fast prototyping and 3D printed technologies;
Collaboration with other disciplines (electronics, software, biology, chemistry) to ensure the successful integration of their designs with the rest of the system;
English language skills (written and spoken).
Soft skills:
Proactive attitude;
Strong team player;
Propensity for multidisciplinarity;
Experience or strong interest to bioinspired approaches for system design.
The successful candidate will be offered a highly competitive salary, which will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Applications shall include:
a complete CV with a full list of publications, plus a final section titled “Relevant skills” commenting on the strong points where your CV matches the required skills (list above);
A research statement (up to 3 pages) describing research goals and related plans over a 2-year span of time, in the field of soft robotics;
copy of up to 5 relevant papers , plus a final section titled “Personal contributions” detailing your specific contributions to each presented paper;
name and contacts of 2 referees.
Interested applicants should submit the application package by 28th February, 2021 using the online form. Only complete applications will be evaluated.
For any question, please contact Barbara Mazzolai (barbara.mazzolai@iit.it) and Emma Cappelleri (emma.cappelleri@iit.it).
