Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (https: // chem.uncg.edu/) features an extremely supportive and collegial environment with 15 full-time faculty and a diverse student body. We offer a BS in Biochemistry, a BA, BS, and MS in Chemistry including biochemistry options, and a PhD in Medicinal Biochemistry. Our department is housed in a 170,000 square foot, $35 million state of the art science building. Excellent core instrumentation and state of the art facilities for NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry with full time support staff are available on site.

Position Summary

This is an opening for a Post-Doctoral Fellow position in Natural Products Research in the Laboratories of Professor Nicholas H. Oberlies in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The ideal candidate will have earned a Ph.D. in pharmacognosy, medicinal chemistry, and/or natural products chemistry and will have expertise in the isolation and de novo structure elucidation of bioactive natural products from a variety of source materials, including bacteria, fungi, and/or plants. Besides scientific acumen, a willingness to contribute to a team- oriented research environment and an ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, is essential. The position is a 12-month term appointment with the option of renewal based on progress. This position will report directly to Dr. Oberlies.

The Oberlies Research Group has active, funded projects in both the drug discovery and herbal research realms. In the drug discovery arena, this team is examining diverse source materials, particularly microorganisms like filamentous fungi, for new anticancer and antibiotic lead compounds. In the herbal arena, the team works with plant materials to develop new reference standards and/or examine herbs for potential interactions with cytochrome P450s. Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. or will earn a Ph.D. (before hire date) in Pharmacognosy, Medical Chemistry and/or Natural Products Chemistry.
