Postdoc Materials Scientist (m/f/d) 4D Printing of Shape-Memory Polymers
Reference code: 50044337_2 – 2020/B 20
Commencement date: as soon as possible for 2 years
The place of employment is Teltow (near Berlin).
Fundamental and translational research at the Institute of Biomaterial Science of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is focused on the development of polymer-based biomaterials and devices for healthcare and robotics. At current, we are looking to fill the position of a Postdoc Materials Scientist (m/f/d) – 4D Printing of Shape-Memory Polymers. This will be initially a temporary assignment for two years.
Your tasks
As a Postdoc Materials Scientist (m/f/d) – 4D Printing of Shape-Memory Polymers you will be responsible for:
• computational design and experimental conception of multifunctional shape-memory polymer-based actuator components, demonstrators and devices; creation of computational models for describing and predicting device features
• application of 3D and 4D printing of polymer-based materials based on commercial and custom-made materials, composites, multilayer and multicomponent systems etc.
• set-up of fabrication schemes
• adaptation of printing approaches to match material properties; creation of hybrid and multicomponent devices; establishing desired device functions by single or multimaterial design; selection of materials and material combinations
• comprehensive characterisation of material and device properties and functions; creating and applying test environments to proof material functions/multifunctionality under application of various stimuli
• training and supervision of the technical staff
Your profile
• successfully completed materials science degree with PhD, e.g. in materials sciences, polymer engineering, mechanical engineering
• track record of experience in shape-memory polymers/soft actuators and additive manufacturing documented by high-level publications
• hands-on skills in set-up and handling of 3D printing instruments for polymers
• design of devices (including CAD models) and prediction of device features by computational models
• strong organizational and communication skills
• fluent business language in English or German, with a working knowledge of the other; international applicants are encouraged to continuously work on German language skills
• high level of personal commitment and stress resilience
• experienced handling of MS Office, CAD software and instrument software
