Job Description
The Bascom-Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, is searching for two highly-motivated Postdoctoral Associates with strong research experience in molecular/cellular biology and animal research for biological drug discovery and development. These positions are part of a new NIH-funded project to develop novel drug therapies.
Research will focus on developing next-generation targeted anti-angiogenic therapies for various vascular diseases. The laboratory recently developed the only technology of ligandomics with broad applicability to discover high-quality drug targets for novel therapies of different diseases, including but not limited to angiogenic diseases (PMID: 29326083). Using this powerful technology, we discovered highly promising drugs target and developed next-generation targeted anti-angiogenic therapies (PMID: 28330905). This project will investigate drug candidates in various stages. These include characterization of humanized antibodies to treat angiogenic diseases in animal models, analysis of other newly-identified novel drug targets in vitro and in vivo, and ligandomics screening to discover additional unknown drug targets. Our research activities are described at https://umiamihealth.org/bascom-palmer-eye-institute/research/meet-our-researchers/wei-li-phd. Our recent publications can be found at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/myncbi/wei.li.2/bibliography/40172985/public/?sort=date&direction=descending.
The research activities are to: 1) characterize molecular mechanisms of a novel angiogenic factor in vitro and in vivo; 2) investigate the therapeutic efficacy of a novel anti-angiogenic therapy to treat retinal vascular diseases, including retinopathy of prematurity, diabetic retinopathy, and wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) angiogenesis in animal models; 3) analyze the toxicology and pharmacokinetics of the new therapy in animal models; 4) ligandomics analysis; and 5) write postdoctoral fellowships. After initial training, Postdoctoral Associates will independently investigate the mechanistic studies in vitro and analyze preclinical therapeutic efficacy and toxicology studies in animal models.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have a Ph.D. and/or MD, have productive scientific contributions through publication of high impact peer-reviewed papers, and show strong commitment to science. Applicants with advanced skills in molecular biology, cell biology, protein biochemistry, immunohistochemistry and animal research are highly desired. Experience in bioinformatics analysis is a plus. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. These positions represents an excellent opportunity for career development in drug discovery and development with opportunities to interact with our industrial partners.
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has been ranked as the #1 eye hospital in the past 15 consecutive years (2004 -2017) by U.S. News and World Report.
If interested, please send a CV, 1-2 page summary/Cover letter describing past accomplishments and 3 references, including contact information to Dr. Wei Li at w.li@med.miami.edu. and complete an online employment application by applying to this job. Positions are available immediately.
