  Job title: Postdoctoral Training Fellow

Location: The Francis Crick Institute, Midland Road, London

  Contract: Fixed-term and fixed-term (3 years)

Salary: Competitive with benefits, subject to skills and experience

  Vacancy ID: 9765

  Short summary

This is a postdoctoral position in the Ralser lab, that will be involved in the analysis of cellular metabolism, as it operates as biochemical network within the cell, or between cells when they share metabolites. An ideal candidate hence holds a PhD in the life sciences (biochemistry, systems biology, chemical engineering, computational or network biology). Alternatively, the post is of interest for a postdoc with an analytical background (mass spectrometry, systems approaches with computational skills) and that aims to develop his/her skills in the area of systematic and network biology. The project will based on the application of fast proteomic technology, developed in the Ralser lab, to study how cells respond to a changing metabolism.

  Project scope

Eukaryotic cells produce metabolites not only for their own metabolism, but also export a series of metabolic intermediates into their immediate environment. It is believed that a lot of this export occurs due to the biochemical structure of the metabolic network. This metabolite export enables cells to establish exchange interactions and to specialize on the single cell level. In this project, systematic experiments are conducted by modern techniques of mass spectrometry based proteomics, with yeast functional genomics are used understand which metabolites are exchanged between cells, for which reason, and to define the physiological consequences on the individual cell. This project will generate understanding which parts of metabolism operate from within, and which parts between cells.

  About us

The Francis Crick Institute is a biomedical discovery institute dedicated to understanding the fundamental biology underlying health and disease. Its work is helping to understand why disease develops and to translate discoveries into new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, infections, and neurodegenerative diseases.

An independent organisation, its founding partners are the Medical Research Council (MRC), Cancer Research UK, Wellcome, UCL (University College London), Imperial College London and King’s College London.

The Crick was formed in 2015, and in 2016 it moved into a new state-of-the-art building in central London which brings together 1500 scientists and support staff working collaboratively across disciplines, making it the biggest biomedical research facility under in one building in Europe.

The Francis Crick Institute will be world-class with a strong national role. Its distinctive vision for excellence includes commitments to collaboration; developing emerging talent and exporting it the rest of the UK; public engagement; and helping turn discoveries into treatments as quickly as possible to improve lives and strengthen the economy.

If you are interested in applying for this role, please apply via our website (https://www.crick.ac.uk/careers-and-study ).

The closing date for applications is 24/02/2019 at 23:30.

All offers of employment are subject to successful security screening and continuous eligibility to work in the United Kingdom.
