  The Postdoctoral Program is designed for true investigational and experimental research. Participants will be mentored by renowned industry scientists and collaborators at AbbVie and focused on delivering cutting-edge advancements in Discovery, Development Sciences and BioPharma. The enriching training program offers a balance of structured learning and work experience which fosters a learning environment to advance individual development with accessibility to high-level knowledge building across the drug development continuum. Technical expert that will investigate, identify, develop and optimize new methods/ techniques to address critical project needs. Continuously seek to improve existing laboratory methods and processes. Read and adapt literature to accomplish assignments. Demonstrate mastery of broad range of experimental techniques and methods of data analysis.

  Through our Postdoc program, we are hiring postdocs from key academic institutions for preferred areas of science in the U.S., while providing a unique opportunity for participants to build a solid career foundation in the pharmaceutical industry while building the AbbVie brand as an employer of choice for scientific talent. The program offers a balance of structured learning and work experience, with accessibility to high-level knowledge building across the drug development continuum.

  Process R&D Overview:

  Process Research and Development (PR&D) invents chemical processes and prepares active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) to enable clinical trials, toxicology studies and drug product development for AbbVie’s pre-clinical and clinical drug pipeline. PR&D scientists create valuable intellectual property through composition of matter, chemical processes, and technologies resulting in cost effective commercial manufacturing processes.

  Intent of the Research:

  Metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions are used routinely in the pharmaceutical industry. Although several methodologies have been developed in the past two decades, practical solutions for coupling of challenging nucleophiles such as sterically hindered amines, sterically hindered alcohols, F-, CF3-, NO2-, CN-, SO2CF3-, sulfonamide, etc. are still highly sought after. AbbVie has discovered a novel family of phosphine ligands that enable some of these transformations. The post-doctoral fellow will work on further exploration of these ligands. A variety of phosphine ligands will be synthesized and be tested in metal-catalyzed transformations. A modular synthetic approach will be developed to rapidly synthesize several analogs of the ligand. High-throughput, parallel screening techniques will be utilized to screen these ligands in reactions of interest to AbbVie. Testing of these ligands in metal-catalyzed reactions will allow exploration of previously unknown space in catalysis with respect to the steric and electronic properties of ligands.

  Key Responsibilities Include:

  Synthesis of air-sensitive compounds

  High-throughput experimentation

  Collection, analysis, and interpretation of analytical data such as NMR, mass-spec, IR, x-ray, etc.

  Preparation of manuscripts

  Presentation of results in internal and external scientific conferences

  Basic Qualifications:

  Successful completion and defense of a PhD in Organic or Organometallic chemistry

  Demonstrated record of scientific achievement (i.e. strong publication in a top tier peer review journal(s)

  Extensive laboratory research experience and desire to continue in a laboratory focused role.

  Ability to multitask and work with timelines

  Ability to thrive in a fast paced, multi-disciplinary environment interacting with a diverse group of experts within or outside of scientific discipline.

  Enthusiasm and passion for conducting creative scientific research

  Work authorization in the United States

  Preferred Qualifications:

  Highly skilled in organic synthesis

  Experienced in with working air-sensitive compounds

  Expertise in NMR, mass-spec, x-ray, IR and chromatography

  Ability to collaborate with peer researchers

  Excellent problem-solving skills including critical and analytical thinking.

  Demonstrated scientific writing skills and strong verbal communication skills.

  Global mindset to thrive in a diverse culture and environment.
