Job Description

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : **Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Do you want to join a dynamic team that helps tackle some the most challenging issues facing our nation's security?** The Material Mechanics and Tribology Department is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee in materials science and solid mechanics. You will work in collaboration with a broad team across a variety of fields to develop new methods to characterize glass and glass-ceramic processing, microstructure, and failure. On any given day, you may be called on to: + You will develop a fundamental understanding of crack initiation in glass and relate to a failure criterion for glass-to-metal seals + Perform fracture specimen design and specimen preparation + Develop and perform experiments to measure R-curve of microstructural scale cracks in glass-ceramics + Model fracture processes with commercial and/or in-house finite element software + Present novel developments both internally and externally at various meetings, seminars, and conferences

Required:
+ Ph.D. conferred within 5 years prior to employment in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, or other applicable branches of science and engineering + Coursework in solid mechanics with an emphasis on fracture and brittle failure + Experience with finite element modeling techniques and computational fracture mechanics + Excellent written and oral communication skills, as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate professional conferences + Ability to obtain and maintain a US Department of Energy L security clearance

+ You should be able to work independently, with the ability to integrate effectively into a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment + Experience with experimental mechanics techniques with an emphasis on the mechanics of brittle materials + Experience with fractography and post-mortem failure analysis techniques + Experience with stochastic analysis and quantification of margins and uncertainty + Research experience in solid mechanics with an emphasis on fracture and brittle failure + You should demonstrate strong interpersonal and organizational skills

Department Description:

The mission of the Materials Mechanics & Tribology department is to develop fundamental understanding of mechanical behavior of materials and to operationalize this understanding to resolve the engineering challenges facing Sandia's national security missions. The department has solved materials problems in Nuclear Deterrence (ND) applications ranging from routine material compatibility concerns to manufacturing scale issues. In addition to ND, the department also has a strong record of applying its resources to develop solutions for many unique challenges including; glass to metal seals, hardening drill bits, lubricating satellite mechanisms, coating hypersonic rails, and even measuring the elasticity of eye corneas.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment. If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.
