A position is available in the Buchan lab to study cytoplasmic mRNA biology. We are particularly interested in the assembly, disassembly and function of stress granules and P-bodies, which are cytoplasmic mRNA-protein (mRNP) assemblies that are implicated in regulation of mRNA translation, storage and decay. Recent evidence also suggests important roles for these mRNP bodies in viral defense, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. A related focus is on the role of vesicular trafficking pathways in mediating clearance of P-bodies, stress granules and aggregates of proteins implicated in neurodegenerative disease such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
