QMUL11800 – Postdoctoral Research Assistant

There is an exciting opportunity for a motivated post-doctoral scientist to join a global health research group within the Blizard Institute. The Blizard Institute is the largest institute of Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry and has the mission of advancing translational medicine for the benefit of population health. The Blizard Institute provides a stimulating scientific environment and state of the art infrastructure and facilities. In the 2014 REF, QMUL is ranked 9th out of multi-faculty universities. The Medical School is 7th in Clinical Medicine and 5th in Public Health, Health Services and Primary Care with 90% of research rated as 3*+ 4* in the overall power ranking for these unit of assessments. In Clinical Medicine, QMUL was ranked 4th nationally for quality of outputs.

Dr Andrew Prendergast’s research group focuses on infection and immunity in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in the setting of HIV and malnutrition. We have a new post-doc position to set up and coordinate a large immunology research study across Kenya, Uganda, Malawi and Zimbabwe. This MRC-funded project is a substudy of the REALITY trial, which showed that additional antimicrobial prophylaxis given to adults and children with advanced HIV infection at the time of starting antiretroviral therapy reduced mortality compared to co-trimoxazole prophylaxis alone. We now want to understand what impact an enhanced infection prophylaxis bundle has on immune activation, enteropathy and microbial translocation using stored samples from the trial in each country.

Although the post will be based at the Blizard Institute in London, there will be a substantial amount of travel to each country to set up assays at each site, provide ongoing support and supervision to local scientists and to ensure quality control across sites.

Applicants must have a PhD degree in a relevant subject and substantial previous immunology laboratory research experience, including proficiency in flow cytometry. Excellent organizational and communication skills will be required, together with the ability to work well within a team. Experience of work in a low-income setting is highly desirable.

This is a full-time, fixed time post for two years, and will start on 1st September 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. Starting salary will be in the range £32,405 – £36,064 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit salary pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
