Drs. Anthony Nichols and Paul Boutros are leading a multi-institutional collaboration called the Global Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer Initiative (GATCI) to study a rare, but nearly universally fatal type of undifferentiated thyroid cancer called anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC). We have sequenced 180 of these rare tumors and high impact manuscripts are in progress. Our research program is well funded by external grants.
Up to 80% of the time these cancers arise from well-differentiated, typically indolent thyroid cancers. Through sequencing of both the well differentiated and undifferentiated thyroid cancer components, we have identified shared variants, which proves a common genetic origin. More interestingly, there were additional mutations seen exclusively in the undifferentiated components of the tumors, a subset of which we speculate are critical to thyroid cancer progression. However, these variants require functional validation.
An ambitious, hardworking Post-Doc is sought to carry our this functional validation using CRISPR/Cas9, siRNA and overexpression studies to altered well differentiated thyroid cancer cell lines and xenograft models to induce differentiation into an ATC phenotype. Bioinformatics skills are of significant additional value. This project has the potential to provide profound insights into the progression of thyroid cancer. High impact publications are anticipated. …
