A post-doctoral research associate position is available, starting immediately, in the Cell Dynamics Lab headed by Dr. Arpita Upadhyaya at the University of Maryland College Park, Department of Physics. The Upadhyaya lab uses a combination of biophysical and cell biological approaches to investigate how immune cells and cancer cells respond to physical cues. This project will focus on understanding how cytoskeletal forces regulate T cell, B cell and cancer cell signaling, and how the physical properties of the environment, such as stiffness and topography, modulate cellular signaling responses. The project involves the development and use of force measurement techniques, including traction force microscopy, force bio-sensors and live cell fluorescence imaging using state of the art tools (e.g. single molecule imaging). The Upadhyaya lab is equipped with state of the art TIRF imaging with easy access to a newly developed Imaging Core facility with confocal microscopy, multi-photon and light sheet imaging. The candidate will also have the option of developing other projects that are broadly within the lab's scope and interests and have the potential to collaborate with leading laboratories at UMD as well as at the NIH.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (physics, biophysics, biomedical engineering, biology, mechanical engineering) with a strong publication record that reflects individual accomplishment, a demonstrated proficiency in biophysics or biology. Prior hands-on experience with live cell fluorescence microscopy, confocal imaging, MATLAB or other programming languages is expected. The candidate should have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team, the willingness and ability to mentor graduate and undergraduate students, strong verbal and written communication skills in English, motivation and most importantly, a high level of creativity.
