ANU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences

The Australian National University, Research School of Physics and Engineering, the Centre for Plasmas and Fluids is seeking an early career academic with excellent numerical skills and a firm foundation in theoretical physics and/or applied mathematics, as well as the ability to communicate clearly research results and to work in a collaborative environment. Knowledge of plasma physics, computational fluid dynamics and numerical analysis is desirable, but not essential.

An exciting opportunity exists to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow to develop simulations of hot plasmas using a radically new formulation of magnetohydrodynamics, Multi-region Relaxed MHD (MRxMHD. (The key idea of MRxMHD is to partition the plasma into finitely many relaxed sub-volumes separated by current/vortex sheet interfaces whose dynamics is derived variationally.) The project, "Multi-Region Relaxation Dynamics in Fusion and Stellar Plasmas" is funded by the Australian Research Council grant.

In a collaboration between the Australian National University (ANU) and Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, USA, the Postdoctoral Fellow will develop a computational time evolution implementation of this new dynamical MHD theory to simulate the nonlinear evolution of plasma instabilities. Applications include edge-localised modes (ELMs) in toroidal magnetic confinement fusion experiments and flare phenomena in solar plasmas.
