Postdoctoral position, experimental researcher on environmental liquid surfaces (1 – 3 years)

The open 1 – 3 year position is for atmospheric chemical physics with emphasis on experimental research on environmental liquid surfaces. The position is located at the Synchrotron-based Atmospheric Research group (ATMOS), which is part of the Nano and Molecular Systems Research Unit (NANOMO). NANOMO is an international research environment, with focus on molecular scale materials research and novel applications of spectroscopic and imaging techniques. NANOMO carries out electron-, ion- and UV-to-X-ray spectroscopic and imaging experiments of both low-density and condensed materials. A major part of the experimental research focuses on activities at international synchrotron radiation centers. The unit coordinates the Finnish national participation in the MAX IV facility, participates to the planning and constructing of the FinEstBeaMS beamline, and contributes to the European Free Electron Laser Eu-XFEL project. Since 2012, the NANOMO unit has had 17 Ph.D. degrees, around 200 peer-reviewed papers, 6 IPR announcements and 2 patents.

Subject field and description of the position
The position is part of the ATMOS research group (http://www.oulu.fi/nanomo/atmos), profiling on the properties and functions of the atmospheric nanoparticles. ATMOS is a highly multidisciplinary research group, integrating an array of experimental and computational approaches. Driven by recent ERC H2020 grant, the ATMOS core group will during 2017 be formed by 1 professor, 4 post doctoral researchers, and 3 doctoral students, in addition to undergraduate students. Main research focus is on the role of nanoparticles, their composition and structure, in atmospheric chemistry and climate processes. Experimental approaches involve synchrotron radiation based spectroscopy and nanoparticle and atmospheric aerosol methods. These are complemented by computational strategies, ranging from molecular level physics, aerosol thermodynamics and chemistry, to atmospheric and climate modelling. ATMOS is one of the first research groups focused directly at the interface between synchrotron-based materials science and atmospheric research. Research also targets wider aspects of environmental and nanoparticle research, related to plant physiology and climate change, extraterrestrial atmospheres, and process understanding of industrial nanoparticle applications. ATMOS coordinates the founding of Nordic Center for Synchrotron-based Atmospheric Research, currently including 6 research groups from Sweden and Finland.
The research focus of the post will be on designing, planning, and conducting surface and aerosol focused characterization of atmospheric organics using primarily synchrotron based photoelectron spectroscopy. The design phase will involve significant development of experimental setups, mainly in home-lab and at MAX IV synchrotron facility in Lund, Sweden. The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for a team of 3 – 6 doctoral and master’s students as part of the development, carrying out, and analysis of experiments. During experimental campaigns, the postdoctoral researcher will be responsible team leader and for obtaining scientific objectives of the campaign.
The length of the position is one year with an option for extension for two additional years. Starting date of the position is 1.5.2017 or as soon as possible after.

Required Qualifications and assessment
The successful applicant must have a completed Ph.D. in physics, spectroscopy, materials science, or a related field. Applicant must show a visible scientific profile. Significant experience in synchrotron-radiation based photoelectron spectroscopy (PES, XPS), or similar, especially surface related spectroscopic techniques is necessary. Additional knowledge of experimental molecular beam methods and data analysis using molecular dynamics simulations will be considered an advantage.
The two-year extension to the one-year position will be effective if the primary requirements of successfully implementing pilot experimental strategy are fulfilled during the one-year time.
Fluent English, good communication skills and good teamwork skills are required. Further, shown potential in acquiring supplementary (extramural) funding, and teaching experience will be taken as a merit when choosing the scientist. When assessing the applicant’s qualifications, issues to be considered will include scientific publications, thesis supervision, activity in the scientific community, practical familiarity with the field in question, scientific work abroad, and other international activities.
As a part of the ATMOS team, the duties also include supervising scientific research, i.e. Ph.D. students and post-doc researchers. Participation in teaching as a part of the physics curriculum, and in supervision of M.Sc. and B.Sc. theses is naturally expected.

Salary
The salary will be based on the levels 5 – 6 of the demand level chart for university-level teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 46.3 % of the job-specific component). The salary is thus being in practice roughly 3,000 – 4,000 € per month, depending on the appointee’s qualification and experience.
