摘要:

The School is a research-rich academic community with a well-established reputation in the fields of biology, chemistry, geography, environmental science, ecology and forensic science. We have strong links with professional bodies including the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management, the Institution of Environmental Sciences and the Institute of Place Management. We work with research institutions, industry partners, national organisations and NGOs worldwide, to deliver solutions that address challenges posed in sustainability, health and advanced materials. We advise on environmental impacts, mitigation and sustainability, and researchers in our Centre for Aviation Transport and the Environment were awarded Nobel Certificates for their contribution to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Role

Applications are invited for a Grade 8 Research Associate position to work within a multidisciplinary team to undertake research in the field of surface engineering (magnetron sputtering) and thin film characterisation.

Working with our partners, AWE plc, the successful candidate will deposit specified functional films (metal and metal oxides) utilising pulsed magnetron sputtering and variable field strength magnetrons; undertake plasma diagnostics of the process and characterise the structure and properties of the films using a range of surface analysis techniques, which may include SEM, EDX, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, nanoindentation, AFM, etc. Based on the outcomes of the initial research, a PVD deposition system capable of productionising the deposition process will be developed.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in an appropriate materials, surface engineering or physics related field and have prior research expertise in pulsed magnetron sputtering, plasma diagnostics and thin film characterisation techniques.

You will have the ability to work independently and as part of a team in order to deliver individual and team objectives.

You will be a member of the Surface Engineering Group at Manchester Metropolitan University and you will contribute to group activities and undertake student supervision, as required. You will be expected to report progress in formal meetings and to disseminate the results at conferences and in leading international journals.

Closing date: 16th February 2017
