Job description

Malaria continues to be the most important parasitic disease with more than 500,000 deaths annually. One of the major challenges in malaria control is the efficient spread of malaria from humans to mosquitoes. Malaria transmission depends on the presence of gametocytes in the peripheral blood, but determinants of gametocyte production and infectivity are poorly understood. The aim of this post-doc position is to coordinate and participate in projects that characterize gametocyte production, infectivity and anti-gametocyte immunity in cohorts of naturally and experimentally exposed individuals in Burkina Faso and The Gambia.

As part of the project, existing molecular and immunological tools will be optimised to quantify gametocyte commitment, maturation, clonal complexity and naturally acquired anti-gametocyte immune responses. These assays will be used in concert with mosquito feeding assays to perform the first comprehensive study on the natural dynamics of malaria transmissibility.

For this project, which is at the cutting edge of malaria research, we are looking for an ambitious, talented PhD-level researcher with an interest in the biology and epidemiology of falciparum malaria, who enjoys the prospect of working in an international environment and taking a leading role in project planning and implementation. The project will have an extensive field component and the candidate should be willing to spend several months per year in Burkina Faso or The Gambia. Affinity and experience with epidemiology and statistical data analysis are essential qualities of the envisaged candidate. Experience with molecular biology and/or immunology and work experience in Africa or Asia are desired (but not essential) qualities of the envisaged candidate.

Profile

• A Ph. D. degree with a focus on epidemiology, biology, biomedical sciences, medicine or a related area
• Experience in research methodology and statistical data analysis
• Experience in supervising PhD and/or MSc students
• An independent and well-structured working style
• Well-developed social skills directed to work in an international team
• Strong motivation and ambition to succeed in scientific research
• Experience in either infectious diseases, molecular biology and/or immunology is desirable
• Experience in working in Africa/Asia is desirable
